Since 1 March 2003, you'll first need one of 5 temporary visas (lasting from 3 months up to 4 years) to live and do business in Australia unless you qualify for the “Business Talent” (BT) visa (for the BT visa you must have minimum business and personal assets of $A1.5M and minimum business annual sales of $A3M).

BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS WHEN APPLYING FOR VISA
To apply for any of the following visas, applicants must first be categorised according to what they have been doing in business over recent years. There are three categories:
• Senior executives – been employed in one of the top 3 levels of management of a company with a certain minimum annual turnover, or
• Business owners – owned at least a portion their own business,
or
• Investors – been directly involved managing at least one qualifying business or eligible investment
Then, inside of each category there are two visa choices – the standard visa which has tougher eligibility criteria and the state-sponsored version of the same visa which is easier;
